I have a 20 hp tracker engine;; 1996 i used to have an 25 hp merc, when it ran there was alwase a STEADY- stream of water comeing out, it was a short shaft, I just bought this boat, 14ft guide super V, love it, anyway, i just had it out today, i noticed the water would, spit a little then nice even stream, 10 seconds then spit again, then steady stream, i troled for over 1 hour, kept feeling the water comeing out, it never got real hot, so the engine was cooling itself. now could this be normal on a long shaft, or is the water pump bad, i really don't want to tear it apart to find nothing is wrong, any opinions will be appreciated.

Long or short shaft does not matter .----------------May be due to a thermostat if so equipped.----------------But ----------If you do not know how old the impeller is you should install a new one.-------------Certainly cheaper than a new motor !!

Thanks for the reply, your right- i did think thermostat,,,, but would a 20hp, merc. have one? thats what it seems like its doing. opening and closeing. it will spit for 5 seconds then run a nice stream for 10 seconds;; i just did not think there would be a thermostat in a 20hp'''''''''''''''

The old style ( internal reed valve ) Mercury motors did not have thermostats.--------Some newer ones did and you have to supply year and serial # to look it up !!!!!!

The Johnson outboards of 5.5 HP had thermostats in the early 1960's -------------------Your motor is shown to have a thermostat ( may have been an option ) in the cylinder cover / water jacket.-----Check to see if it is there.

I did look, i am not sure but i think i see it, if its where the hose connects at the cylinder head, instead of just a fitting, there is a small 2 bolted oblong cup, about 2inches long, i think this is the thermostat. is this correct? anyway, i am so glad i did not have a water pump job, thanks all;;;;;;;;;;;:) if there is any way to send me a picture of it????????
