"I whacked a rock and now my sweetie won't shift from forward into neutral and reverse, the local Honda Shop say these lower units CANNOT be rebuilt. I CANNOT pay their outrageous price for a new one. Can anyone help. Thanks"

"Thanks J-I-T, I'm a regul

"Thanks J-I-T, I'm a regular e-bayer so naturally I checked it out. The only unit there is for a 40-50 HP and the experts tell me that although it would probably fit, the gear ratios are different so it wouldn't work. Now I'm making the rounds of the forums with my WANTED.

Is it true that these units are not even re-buildable by a dealership?"

"Of course the lower units are

"Of course the lower units are rebuildable. Perhaps your dealer does not have the expertise to perform the rebuild, or just doesn't want to. A new lower unit lists for $1,200. A rebuild can be expensive too, just depends on how many parts you have to replace, (bearings, gears, prop shaft, clutch dog, etc.)

The gear cases on all BF35, BF40, BF45 and BF50's are interchangable, regardless of the year (Part Number = 41100-ZW4-H13ZA, supercedes part Nuber 41100-ZW4-H10ZA, either part number is OK). There is no difference in the gear ratios. Hope this helps."

"Honda Dude, you are the DUDE!

"Honda Dude, you are the DUDE! Really good info.
There may not be time to pull this off, but since you are sitting at your computer, could you please go to e-Bay auction # 170073971898 and give me your assessment. The auction ends today. (Tuesday) I've just checked and my engine is a BF35A BLAG and it would be an LRT which shouldn't make any difference.

I want to jump on this Florida lower unit, and it seems like it would be a deal at twice the current bid. Thanks a bunch for your help."

"I checked out the lower unit

"I checked out the lower unit on ebay. Looks like it has seen a lot of use. Not sure why they say to replace the prop shaft seal, since there is no water in the lower unit. Sometimes old grease from the prop shaft gets pushed around the seal and makes the seal look bad when in fact all it is old black grease. Replacing the water impeller is a 5 minute job and should be done. Without being able to physically see/inspect the unit I can't tell if it is in good shape or not. Since the seller is from SW Floriday, assume that this unit has seen substantial amount of saltwater use. As always when you buy from Ebay - buyer beware. Only after you get it in your hands will you know if you got a good deal or not. However, for the current price of $155, it's worth a try. "

i have to ask, did you disconect the shifter linkage??? just above the lower unit it has a threaded coupling that splits it where it is routed to the upper unit.
Aside from that the only thing holding it is the 5 bolts (2 ea side, 1 under the trim tab anode)
I don't know if it is legal for me to copy and paste the repair manual section in here, just send me a email if you need more help.
