"I was cruising at 3800rpm when I noticed the rpm begin to increase up to 4500rpm without any discernible increase in actual engine speed. Then it dropped off to 38, hunted about some, up to 45 and back again. Then I was at my destination and it didn't do it on the return trip.

I had the same thing happen a couple of years ago and thinking it was the gauge, I replaced it.

I don't think it is the gauge this time, so what could it be? I'm thinking a loose ground wire or similar? I hate getting into the back of the instrument panel
