VRO pump options 1987 40hp

I would do a search through the forum but I am afraid I might not get my exact case/issue. I have a 1987 Johnson J40ELCUD 40 hp. I am not the original owner. The VRO (pn 5007421) has been only used as a fuel pump and now it has started to leak. The thought of buying a $400 VRO is not happening. Is it possible to buy a fuel pump only (I find 0438556 or 18-7352) only? What else would I need to make it work? If not, I was wondering if anyone has just blocked off the pulse vacuum line and ran some sort of electric pump. Or is there a generic vacuum driven option? Thanks for the help!

Re: VRO pump options

Holley makes an unregulated fuel pump 6-8 psi, that will work. also an omc fuel pump will work, (0438556)

Re: VRO pump options

OK, I got the pump. It doesn't exactly bolt in I see. It has two hose ports which I assume are gas in & out. It seems to mount somewhere with the supplied gasket. I figure the center hole through this gasket is the vacuum as the others are through holes for mounting. So, to use this I will need to tap that port and add a hose adapter. I also assume it need to still have the pulse/check valve on the vacuum? Are I even close here? Oh, the pump is on Marine Engine p.n. 438556.

Re: VRO pump options

The mosquitos have taken over my boat. I did a little reading in my Clymer's manual. Looks like on a non VRO the fuel pump bolts to the crank case somewhere which I will try to locate tomorrow. I am hoping that there is a cover plate on my VRO type motor which I can remove and install the fuel pump in it's place. Then plug the vacuum line for the VRO and I'm in business. Sound correct?
