"Does anyone know if the Oil pump piston and linkage for 1998 VRO units has been replaced by a newer version which is slightly longer than the original piston?
Here's the long story leading to that question:
I recently rebuilt the VRO on my 1996 150 Johnson. Having bought the boat second-hand, I found upon inspection that my VRO was a later model than my motor. After replacing the seals, diaphragms, and washers in the repair kit, I reassembled using the original oil piston, which had a worn, blue o-ring seal. The motor ran fine on water at the house, for about 10 minutes with no warnings or issues.
I took the boat to the river for a load test, on the trailer everything again checked out fine, light smoke in exhaust seemed to confirm that oil was present. As soon as I backed off the trailer, the "no oil" warning sounded. I shut down the engine. I checked all lines, reservoir, and found no restrictions to oil flow. Restarting provided the same results, so I shut down, winched up, and went home.
Relieving the fuel from the carburetors confirmed that there was little or no oil in the fuel. I took down the VRO again, carefully re-checking all components against the most accurate diagrams I could find, everything was correct. However, the oil piston seemed to be less than a snug fit, and I felt that it could be failing to produce a vacuum on the negative stroke. I ordered a replacement, according to the part listed by BRP. When I attempted to install the replacement piston and linkage I found it to be at least 1/16th longer in total than the original equipment. Although I have now installed that part, I am concerned that the length of this part will prevent that piston from moving far enough to bring oil into the chamber, and I will have the same problem, again. Obviously, I will run my next test with a premixed remote tank to avoid engine damage, but I am also concerned about damage to the housing for the VRO, which ain't cheap(as nothing that comes from BRP ever is). Any mastertech knowledge would be greatly appreciated."

"Well, I have the answer to my question. The current part number for this replacement is TOO LONG, and cannot move far enough to bring oil into the chamber. For anyone who replaces this oil piston and linkage, check this carefully."
