VRO Disconnect Procedure

"I have a 1985 185hp johnson.

"I have a 1985 185hp johnson. I disconnected and plugged the oil hose into the VRO pump, drained and mixed all of the gas with oil and pumped back in. What else do i have to do to the VRO pump. My concern was that the VRO pump was also my fuel pump and i still needed it. Is this the case or do i just disconnect all wires?. Any response will be appreciated.}"

"(VRO Changeover Judgement

"(VRO Changeover Judgement Call)
(J. Reeves)

The VROs first came out in 1984 and have been upgraded quite a few times. In my opinion, back around 1988, they had perfected them but I think that they were upgraded even more since then. As long as the warning system is operating as it should, I feel quite at ease with them.

Some boaters have voiced their thoughts such as "What if that overpriced plastic horn should fail while I'm under way for some reason, and the VRO decides to fail five minutes later?" Obviously that would result in a big problem which really brings their fears into view.

The word "ease" is the key word though. If one has the slightest feeling of being ill at ease with that setup, then they should take the route they feel more at ease with. A judgement call each individual would need to make on their own.

(VRO Pump Conversion To Straight Fuel Pump)
(J. Reeves)

You can convert the VRO pump into a straight fuel pump, eliminating the oil tank and VRO pump warning system, but retain the overheat warning setup (and fuel restriction warning if so equipped) by doing the following:

1 - Cut and plug the oil line at the engine so that the oil side of the VRO pump will not draw air into its system. Trace the wires from the back of the VRO to its rubber plug (electrical plug) and disconnect it.

2 - Trace the two wires from the oil tank to the engine, disconnect those two wires, then remove them and the oil tank.

3 - Mix the 50/1 oil in the proper amount with whatever quantity fuel you have. Disconnect the fuel line at the engine. Pump the fuel primer bulb until fuel exits that hose with the tint of whatever oil you used. Reconnect the fuel hose.

That's it. If you want to test the heat warning system to ease your mind, have the key in the on position, then ground out the tan heat sensor wire that you'll find protruding from the cylinder head. The warning horn should sound off.

"Hose from crankcase to VRO...

"Hose from crankcase to VRO.... pressure of downward travel of piston passes from crankcase thru hose to apply pressure to diarhrams in order to operate VRO.

Pulse limiter.... prevents unusualy strong pulses from obtaining entrance to VRO, also prevents any flames from within crankcase to reach VRO.

"Obviously the above is design

"Obviously the above is designed to make me feel like a ass. The fact is that, although contrary to the above statement, I do not know everything, but I do enjoy volunteering my limited knowledge and efforts to help my fellow boaters. This is a volunteered task that I give gladly as many others here do, a task that involves a considerable amount of free time, not one that provides income of any kind.

However..... This board is designed to have one member post their problems under their own discussion title, not to have their topic hijacked by someone else. This hijacking problem does ocurr of course, but when brought to the attention of the erring party, that party normally and usually takes the hint, goes to the previous page, clicks on Start New Discussion at the top left blue border, and we take it from there.

This is what I did, and my insertion/advice was totally ignored as if it was overlooked or did not pertain. My insertion was not intended to be insulting nor critical, simply informative of the proper procedure. Obviously my short expression of exsaperation wasn't ignored.

I find two or three members posting under one members single topic difficult to follow, and keeps one jumping back and forth thru various messages, hence my constructive informative reply insert.

So...... go back to the previous page, look at the left side of the BLUE BORDER, then click on the hyperlink Start New Discussion and we'll hopefully go from there.

My last reply/post under this topic."

Joe Reeves: I'm a little green here on the use of this site and hope i didn't do anything wrong. I originally thought i was receiving all of the responses because i didn't log off. Sounds like the problem was that Alfonso didn't start a new discussion. I know your done with it but wanted to apologise if i did anything wrong.
Thanks again for your help with my motor.
