VRO 90 circa 1986 possible fuel problem

Wondering if someone has some advice on my current problem. I took my boat out a couple of weeks back and started first go. Idled out and throttled up onto the plane no problems goes about 200 metres and it dies and stops. Prime it up and it again starts up and I can go along at low revs no problems but get up the plane again and it dies. Thought it may be sucking air through the O ring in fuel line plug so changed plug. Checked breather wasn't blocked, changed plugs and took it out again today and it died again. Got it home and flushed it out. Started first time and ran the whole 10 minutes during flushing. I did notice the fuel filter was all but empty during the time it was running. No alarms or anything.

Any ideas would be greatly appreciated.

You are describing a engine with either a faulty VRO (fuel pump) failure... OR... a fuel/air leak in the fuel line somewhere between the fuel pump and the fuel supply. A air leak in the fuel line anywhere would also leak fuel which would be easy to detect.

If constantly pumping the fuel primer bulb (acting as a manual fuel pump) while the engine's running cures the problem, the cause is normally a failed VRO (fuel pump).

If on the other hand, the fuel primer bulb has a tendency to go flat when this problem takes place... that indicates a fuel restriction at the fuel supply. Let us know what you find.

Thanks Mate,

I suspected it could be something like that. Can't detect any leaks. I did take the fuel line off the under floor fuel tank and petrol was pouring out so it doesn't appear to be a problem with the pick up. Pumping the primer as it's dying doesn't seem to have a big effect on keeping it going and the primer is still hard when it stops. Can a faulty primer cause problems? I did notice fresh oil dripping into the motor well when I got home. Maybe I need to double check my hoses again.
