VP U joint Bellows change.

Hey Mates, Got me a 1986 Bayliner with VP 5.7L/275A drive with mechanical lift. (Not Hydraulic). Been studying schematics but need some expert advice. Can somebody shead a little light on this old fisherman. Need all the help I can get. Thanks much.

To change the bellows and U-joints you need to pull the upper gearbox. Put the drive all the way down and drain the oil. remove the four bolts holding the gearbox on loosen the hose clamp for the bellows. Lift the gearbox up careful not to damage the shim/s they may pull up with the gearbox then just slide it off the PDS splines. While you have the gearbox you may want to change the water fitting on the intermediate housing it is a common wear item and easy to get to with the gearbox off. It wouldnt hurt to get new O-rings to put it back together with and make sure the shims are back where they belong.

Thanks much.

Richard, you will definitely want to replace any O-rings that have been removed.
These O-rings will NOT go a second time around with any measure of assurance!

.

Most tedious part of job is removing old sealant from mating surfaces (especially the intermediate housing) without letting any scraps of old sealant get inside.

Thanks much. Yea, at least its not a mercury. This will be, pull a part, clean or replace. Typing on this website sucks!!!! Plan on all doing new seals. bad corrison, salt water boat.

No comment! ;)

All seals can be replaced without the need for re-shimming IF you know what you're doing... and we can walk you through this.

Things to check:

The main suspension fork where the pivot tube penetrates at the lower section.
The Intermediate housing at the same area.

Most definitely replace the water neck fitting.

Use QuickSilver "Perfect Seal" at all O-rings and mating surfaces.

You'll need to build one of my prop shaft bearing carrier puller tools.
