VP engine swapsterndrive question

i am replacing my 1987 225E v-

i am replacing my 1987 225E v-p engine with a 1986 225D engine. my current drive is a V-P 275 and i am presumming that the older 225d engine originally was mated with a 280 drive. Will the replacement 225d mate up with my newer 275 drive? And what is the difference between the 280 and the 275?

kinda sounds like they mixed and matched to build the 275...hope they took the best of the 270 and 280 in that case.
