I am looking to re-power my boat this winter.

The hull originally came with a 225D driving the AQ 280.

I am looking to re-power with a marinised 5.7L 325 hp.

Is this too much torque for the cone clutch and drive?

My mechanic is of the opinion that the engine should be the weakest link in the drive train.

Should be? or will be?

What size hull?

There will be no issues with the 280 if all is up to snuff. It will more than handle the added horse power and torque.
I'd sure look at the main drive gear bearings (transmission), and I'd replace the PDS bearings (inside of the flywheel cover) while you have the oportunity.
Perhaps consider the Duo Prop as an alternative to more horse power. The DP lower will do approx as much as the higher horse power engine will with a single prop lower.

To pull 325 hp from a 5.7L , typical build techniques are often automotive. Auto builds don't fair well under marine loads.
The 235 is also rated at/near 5,200 rpm.... and we don't operate anywhere near this RPM. I.E., you will not actually realize a 235 hp benefit.
Also, steer clear of the full dished pistons if you have the option. There are much better selections that provide a quench, yet keep the C/R where it needs to be.
Just an FYI on that.
