VP 270 U joint R&R - tips needed

I am looking for tips on removal and install of the U joint crosses W/O removal from the transmission. (I am aware that with removal, we can inspect the main seal, tolerances, etc., but I am going to have an experienced VP/AQ series mechanic look at my drive come Fall/Winter).

Any tips would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

With the male yoke positioned just right, you will be able to remove the two bearing caps from the cross.

I don't use this method but if I did, I would disassemble the center driveline component from the AFT most bearing cross first!

A word to the wise regarding removing the bearing box from the main transmission case:

Make sure that this mechanic understands the importance of applying heat to the area of the threaded inserts! It is imperative that heat be applied prior to attempting to remove the four capscrews.
If the hex sockets were to become "rounded out" you will be taking the transmission to a machine shop for "milling" tool work!

Thanks Rick. I will have a go at it. I will be sure whoever works on my transmission knows that important information. I know of a mechanic, but he is currently painting his commercial building, remodeling several units and doing a few other projects. I'm hoping he frees up in the Fall.

That would be ME........ 2850Bounty on the BOC!

(I thought that your question sounded very familiar)
