Volvo sx gearcase mating

My problem involves mating an upper and lower gearcase on a volvo sx-m drive we recently split and sent away for rebuilding/replacement. The rebuilders sent us back a new lower. When tightenting the case together, I've exceeded the torque spec but cannot eliminate a gap between the bolts. It's the O ring over the driveshaft bearing retainer that's holding it apart. I've lubed it thoroughly and replaced it with a new (sierra) o ring but still have a gap. Is this acceptable? I'm assuming water will get in there and split it come winter. Some of our service manuals seem to show a shoulder on the lower for the o ring to sit in. I've got a flush lower with a slight camber in the upper.. I pulled this apart a few weeks ago and did not recieve the original back, fixed a few boats in the meanwhile so can't really remember exactly what my original lower looked like. Any help would be appreciated

Seems to me you need to discuss this with your "rebuilder"... Did you check the reduction ratio on the unit you got back?

As it turns out, the rebuilder sent us the wrong lower gearcase. Live and learn. Had to buy a brand new one, next time I'll trust them less and take more pictures. Thanks
