"1996 Volvo 5.8 DP-S Drive-Power steering not working. Fluid is full, no leaks. The steering still works but has no power assist. Any ideas how to determine if pump is bad or if hydraulic ram is bad?"

Have you read chapter 15 of the 1992-03 Seloc Repair Manual? I believe it covers the steering system for your engine model.

I do not have a Seloc manual.

I do not have a Seloc manual. I have a Clymer's manual and it tells me nothing I don't already know. Is Seloc the best manual to buy? Thanks for the reply.

"Generally, Seloc is better than Clymer IMO. Of course, your perception may be different depending on whether or not the answer you are looking for is there or not."

I talked to a "mechanic" and he asked me if I had noticed a vibration when drive was turned to sharp angles. I told him that 1 year ago I had the U-joints replaced for that reason and no change in the vibration was noticed. He thinks the pump is bad. Anyone know how the power steering could cause a vibration?

"Hey, I have the same problem

"Hey, I have the same problem this year with mine 5.0GL. Let me know if you come up with a solution!"

"The only way to know for sure

"The only way to know for sure is to hook a manometer at the pressure out from pump, then start the engine. No pressure -no working pump. Make/buy a T-adapter that fits."

"Hi Morten, let me correct you

"Hi Morten, let me correct you if I may, but I think you should use the term "pressure gauge" instead of "manometer". In North America and in the UK, the term "manometer" applies to a u-tube, not to a Bourdon gauge. I know because I was corrected many times in the past in Canada for using your same terminology.

Cheers."
