"This seems like stupid questions, but I am used to asking stupid questions. I have to replace the thermostat on a Volvo Penta AQ 231 (small block Chevy). As I understand it the thermostat sits high in the thermostat housing and seals against the top. The thermostat I have, Volvo part 876305, sits down in the block instead of riding on the block and sealing against the top of the housing. Am I doing something wrong, do I have the wrong part, or is ther something missing? Thanks for you help."

"Thanks, After looking at this again I think I found my answer. There is a lock ring, I don't have, that holds the thermostat tight to the top of the housing. I have found some "thermostat sleeves" on line. Will they do the same thing?"
