Volvo penta timing chain tensioner replacement question

I am replacing the timing belt (not chain) tension pulley in my 1978 AQ120B. (Purchasing auto tensioner). Should I also replace the tensioner spring, or is that unnecessary?

As long as the spring is in good condition no. The nut locks the pully in place once you get the proper tension on the belt. Get the nut slightly snug and tap on the pully bracket with a brass punch to put more tension on the belt and tighten the nut to spec 37 ft lbs.

Thanks kimrwbr1. Yes, I have a pulley coming from an auto parts store (even a genuine Volvo auto pulley is considerably less than the marine pulley).

My belt appeared to have jumped a tooth on the accessory pulley. The belt is a year old and looks in perfect condition upon close examination, any problems with reusing it?

Look close at the crank sprocket I had to scrape the rust out of the grooves when I first set my motor up before the rebuild. After you set the initial timing marks and get the belt tight. disconnect the coil wire and crank on the starter for about six complete revolutions and then check the timing marks and retighten the belt. Then you can put it back together.
