Volvo Penta Stern Drive Problem

Volvo Penta 5.7 - At about 30 mph going forward, I pulled back abruptly on the throttle to avoid going off course all the way through neutral and into reverse. Realizing my mistake, I quickly moved the throttle back into neutral. When the boat came to a full stop I attempted to re-engage into forward and reverse with no success.

The throttle will rev just fine but will not engage into forward or reverse. Can anyone suggest where to begin troubleshooting?

Thanks!

There are no drop and bushings in the Duo Prop sets.

There is a vertical shaft spine coupler that is intended to share during impact….... and a quick prop direction change such as what you did, may have sheared this coupler.

Here is a quick and easy way to find out:
.......drain off 1/2 quart of gear oil.
.......remove the eccentric piston housing.
.......rotate the propellers in either direction, and see if the sliding sleeve is rotating. You may need to hold some friction against it.

If propeller rotation rotates the sliding sleeve, then your coupler is still intact.
If propeller rotation does not rotate the sliding sleeve, then you may have sheared the spline coupler.

Be sure to use a new O-ring at the eccentric piston housing, replace the drain plug and dipstick O-rings, and replace the fill port phenolic gasket.
