Volvo Penta Overheating Help :(

We just bought a 87 Bayliner Capri with a Volvo Penta AQ131A. The second time we took it out we started overheating. I saw it had been spitting out water and coolant. Wondering if the petcock had been left loose from winterizing it, we made sure it was tight. Stumped and frustrated with this being our first boat and not knowing a whole lot I started looking at things and opened the cap to the Strainer Housing and found it was completely packed with sand.... I'm thinking this is either part of the problem or just ANOTHER problem. Does anyone have any feedback on what may be wrong and/or how to fix it?

Well, guess I'll jump in here....you need to boat in deeper water and find a local mechanic. Does the boat have a temperature gauge? I look at mine more often than the river.

1st I would check your impeller and housing. Exhaust manifolds, risers, and heat exchanger for rust/corrosion/blockages? I like to use a digital laser temp reader to see what and where is getting hot? I stare @ my temp gauge alot also but alarms for temp and oil pres. are a very good thing to install if u don't have them. Was this boat's engine winterized properly?
