Volvo Penta Outdrive Leaking Oil

The last time I took out my AQ

The last time I took out my AQ125B/270 it was leaking oil really bad. I could look off the back of the boat and see a drop of oil come up around the top plate of the upper drive and then come to the surface every 5-10 seconds. What do you think this is. I want to fix it myself if it isn't to difficult. Thanks for any help you can offer.

The problem could be a number of things, like the cover being loose, the dipstick being loose, one of the gaskets/seals 1, 11, 12, 73, 8, 64, 67 being faulty. The easiest way to find the leak is to pressure/vacuum-test the drive. Check page 124 (126) on this link to see how to do it.

There is a gasket set available from Sierra for the upper gear assembly:

Should I be able to see throug

Should I be able to see through the gear housing cover(part #4) and the cover(part #77)? I can see a through that gap and that is where the oil looking to be coming from.

"Yes, no problem. The cover is

"Yes, no problem. The cover is there to make your outdrive look nicer and to cover the shifting mechanism. However, water goes behind the cover (aprt 77) all the time the boat is in the water. If this is where the oil is coming from, a likely source could be the shift mechanism seal (part 64). Again, the best way to find out is to carry a pressure/vacuum test.

If you have oil coming into the water, chances are there is also water in the outdrive oil. You would try to find the source of the leak and correct it as soon as possible."

"Yes, it is normal to see a ga

"Yes, it is normal to see a gap between these covers. The shift cover (#77) does not have a water tight seal, it is merely held in place with two bolts and is removed to adjust shifting. If oil is leaking from this area it may be coming from a worn seal around the eccentric piston (#56).

Remove the cover (#77) and inspect. Also drain some oil from the drive to ensure that water has not entered the drive. Pressure test as El states and you will find the leak. Good luck."

"Where is the best place to get these pressure testers? I'm starting to think maybe I should take it somewhere, but I'd like to do it myself if possible.

Thanks for your help."
