I have a 350 Volvo Penta I/O i

I have a 350 Volvo Penta I/O installed in a 1999 Kayot. I bought the boat used 2 years ago and from day one I noticed a very high pitched noise when cruising at engine speeds from 2500-3000 rpm. The dealer was no help at all with this problem. The noise stops at 3000 rpm. I have run the engine up to 2800 rpm at idle and there is no noise. I have changed the water pump and adjusted the belts several times. I recently changed the prop and now the noise stops at 2800 rpm. Has anyone experienced this same problem?

"I have a little bend in one blade of my stainless prop. You should hear the scream.... I thought it was gear whine, but it was just the little bend in 1 blade. That said, I would recommend you drain the oil from your drive and look for metal in it."

Thanks for the input. I did replace the prop and that did change the engine rpm range in which the noise occurs. I have also changed the lower unit lube with no effect and I did not see excessive metal particles. I am wondering if Penta has, or recommends a special lower unit lube or additive. Some automotive positraction rear ends require a special additive to prevent gear noise."

"There is no such thing as "excessive" metal particles. If you found metal particles of visible size in the oil, then I suggest you have a developing problem in the outdrive."
