"I have a Volvo Penta 7.4 GL/DP. There is a "clunk" noise when you shift from nuetral to forward. Is this normal for a Volvo Penta, my Merc-cruiser did't make this noise. Thanks, Greg."

"Normally a Volvo Penta is very smooth especially compared to a Mercruiser, as previously mentioned check your outdrive fluid level as well as what your rpm's are when you shift into gear. Could be anything from a cable adjustment to low fluids to a idle adjustment. Good luck"

"Just for comparison... my 5.7L engine drives a 280 Drive. Idle speed is 550 RPM. When I shift, it is totally smooth and silent."

"There is a brass ring at the base of the vertical shaft in the upper gearcase. The ring absorbs the shock load from the driven gears when the boat is shifted. It is normal for this ring to wear with age. During rebuilds the tolerance between the upper nut and bearing is checked to ensure a smooth shift. Either the ring (part 41) can be replaced, or an oversized nut (part 43) can be installed. You can also grind down the bronze surface beneath the nut to snug up the tolerance.

I would also ensure your shifting linkage is up to snuff as well.
