Volvo penta aq131a acceleration question

Hi new to the forum and new to boating at least I/O boating. I've had jet skis and a jet boat. I have an 88 Barrera with a Volvo penta aq131a and a Volvo penta 275 outdrive. I just replaced the fuel pump fuel filter distributor rotor and points. It was idling OK but would stall out going into gear. It would run good some times but die out others. I took it to a shop and they noticed the rotor would move about an 1/8" side to side. I replaced the distributor and it starts a lot better and idles better. I can put it in gear without it stalling out but it don't have the acceleration that it had before. I have to check the timing tomorrow I'm sure it's off a hair since I just eyeballed it since I didn't have a timing light till tonight. Any suggestions or thoughts would be helpful and appreciated. Thanks.

You need to adjust the points with a dwell meter to as close to 62 degrees as possible then set the base timing at 6 degrees BTDC at 900 rpms. Allways check/set the timing after you adjust the points.

I was just reading that about the points. Would the points and timing needing adjusting cause it to be sluggish? Thanks

I'll have to try to check everything out tomorrow if the weather cooperates which doesn't look to oromising. Thanks again

Yes you will be amazed how much better it will idle as well. If you have messed with the idle air needle on the carb you will need to fine tune it after you get the dwell and timing correct.

Made a little progress today. Got it timed and it ran a little better. Idles nice and wants to pick up but seems to sputter once it gets moving likes it's not getting enough fuel. I'm thinking maybe the carb needs adjusted? Was gonna try to make some adjustments but my good luck with this boat came thru again and the housing for the engine lift/lower motor broke where it mounts at and it started taking water in so that's as far as I got. Hopefully I can find a new one this week and try to make some adjustments to the carb before it gets cold out.

I've been looking haven't seen anything but the whole unit. Hopefully I can find a good used one somewhere. I work with a guy that has a parts boat with a Volvo motor I'm hoping that I get lucky and it has the same out drive as mine but I doubt it does. Thanks for the link. Once I get it back together I'll give that a try

Ouch, you broke the most hard to find part on the boat.
Post a pic of the broken part. I thought the bottom of the tilt mech was iron, and the top aluminum; breakable.

I have parts of one with stripped gears inside.

Ouch, you broke the most ha

It broke where the circle is that mounts to the transom right at both bolt holes. Everything else on it is fine.just the mounting plate. I tried to post a pic but it wouldn't let me.

This forum has a limit on maximum size of photo files. An easy way to reduce picture size is to use the "resize" option in "PAINT", included with all Windows O/S.

Get a photobucket account and upload the pics there and then link them here.

If it's the round flange with the bolts holes get it welded (without catching it on fire)

There are basically two designs of the solex carb this tells you how to adjust it properly. I found if you adjust it for a smooth idle first then goose it. If it hesitates turn the idle air out rich 1/8 turn at a time until you get a nice clean hole shot.

I have dual Solex 44pa1 downdrafts on my AQ130C...does the 1/8 turn comment also apply to them? And if so, you turn the idle air screw out 1/8 turn at a time?

Got amother boat this week for parts. The lift is working now. Just gotta get it back in the water and try to get the carb adjusted and hopefully that'll solve my problem.

Be sure and adjust the points with a dwell meter I was amazed how well it made the engine idle. It has a wide range on the idle air needle and found that after the dwell was set and set the base timing I just used the hole shot to set the idle air needle. Adjust it slowly in until the motor stumbles and back out for a smooth idle. Then quickly throttle up. If it hesitates add 1/8 turn rich and do it again until you get a nice clean hole shot and just leave it alone. You will need to adjust idle speed as you go just keep it at around 900rpms in neutral.
