Volvo Penta AQ125 Overheating

Hi,

Me and my dad recently bought a Bayliner Capri (not sure what year, probly 90's) with a volvo penta aq 125 4cyl engine. It had been sitting for a few years and the guy we bought it from said it just needed a tune up. Here's what happens with the engine. When you run the boat at low speeds everything is great, but when you speed up the engine starts to overheat. For a little bit everything is fine, but then you can start to feel the engine lose power and it starts to backfire through the carborator. My dad, who used to be a mechanic, and his mechanic friend have been working on it for some weeks now and have done a whole bunch of stuff. I dont know everything they have done, but some of the things they did were replace the carborator, got a new thermistat, got a new water pump, fixed any seeable leaks and completely cleaned the radiator and cooling system. What they fixed helped a little, but still didnt fix the problem. Ive read posts with similar problems where people said they fixed the intake neck or something, and my dad says that they checked that out and it looked solid. So if anyone has some advice, i would greatly appreciate the help. My dad and his friend are about to start working on the head gasket to see if that is the problem, but they are running out of ideas. I dont know all the details of things they have done, so if anyone wants and exact list, let me know and I'll ask my dad what they worked on specifically. Thanks.

Check the raw water hose connector in the outdrive. It is probably corrode/perforated so the raw water pump will suck air when the boat is on the plane.

cracked exhaust manifold look for water in the oil coming into the exhaust valve. Sometimes the only sign of the water is slight smoking from the breather vent.

The above is easy to check by using a clear plastic water hose on the intake side of the pump.

carbs might not be synced up and running too lean?

cylinder wall area (block could be cracked) after running pull the plugs and look to see if one looks different from the rest

They often do look OK for a visual inspection while still installed, however pinhole leaks can and will cause overheating.
