"I'm new to boats, and whilst the engine runs great once it's fired up, I'm wondering if electronic ignition would help starting and running, and if so, where I can get it.
distributor is marked - 855932 prestolite IDU 7801 A 6 A.
any help for a novice appreciated."

"Sorry if that sounded a bit dumb, I'm still finding my way around, it's most difficult to restart when the engine is warm, any other suggestions"

"Yes, there are a few things you can do to get better starting. Your carb most likely comes with an automatic electric choke: make sure it works and it is set correctly. Check also that the idle mixture in the carb is set correctly and that the float level is set correctly (otherwise the carb bowl will overflow into the intake manifold and make the idle mixture too rich to start). Also, make sure the spark plugs are gapped correctly (0.9 mm or 0.035") and that the ignition timing is correct (6º BTDC at idle). The coil connectors should be clean and lubricated, and the ignition wires must not leak electrically (if in doubt, replace them).

If everything else fails, set the throtle above idle when attempting to start (without being into gear!!!), then back it to idle once the engine starts.

Also, consider buying the Seloc maintenance and repair manual for your engine. You may also want to download the owner's manual for your engine from the following link and read through it, so that you know more about the power plant you have on your boat.
