Volvo Penta 290A Ticking noise

Figured it may be a long shot. I guess now is a good time to remove manifold/risers and see how they are looking and change out those gaskets and see if that removes the noise.
 
Put a long screwdriver on the drive and put your ear on the handle the louder the noise the closer to the issue. Mine made a similar sound rebuilt the engine and was still there. Put new PDS bearing and crosses the noise went away.
 
If you remove the manifolds and elbows, do your system a favor by replacing the 95mm soft wall "elbow-to-Y-pipe" couplers.
Purchase this 95mm (special order in most cases) soft wall wet exhaust hose by the foot, and make sure that they are approx 2" longer than the OEM.
You will see why when you pull it apart!
 
My muffler guy showed me a trick to locate an exhaust leak tape a soft wire about 18 inches to a 3 ft length of vacuum tubing. Hold one end in your ear and search around the exhaust gaskets just bend the wire to reach hard to get to areas. The ticking will get louder the closer to the leak! Keep clear of moving parts.

Thanks bud, replaced the hoses last year when I took off the risers to examine.

Will give this a shot first as it sounds interesting, but already bought the gaskets so will likely go ahead with it.

Thanks, replaced the hoses last year when I took off the risers to examine.

Your 290A exhaust system will not use risers (risers/spacers will not work with this exhaust system)........ you should have manifolds and elbows only.

Secondly...... if the 95mm exhaust elbow-to-Y-pipe couplers are too short, they can become inadvertently clamped over the scalloped areas of the elbow outlet. If so, this restricts "spent" seawater outgoing flow, and may cause over-heating.
Over-heating at this area may cause blistering at the interior of the 95mm couplers.
 
I have a 290A motor(chevy 350) and a 280 outdrive

Not sure if we're talking about the same setup here.....

With your exhaust system, the Elbow's down angle and the OEM Y-pipe alignment and connection will not allow for Risers/Spacers. A Riser/Spacer would cause a misalignment of this connection.

Note the scalloped areas at the AFT end. This area cannot have a band clamp placed over it.

Also, in my approx 24 years doing AQ series service work, I have seen my share of the OEM 95mm couplers being too short, and I have seen the resulting damage that occurs.

I'm simply offering a suggestion that may prevent you from running into a future issue.

Okay, yep, that's it. I guess I'm calling the elbow you're referring to as a riser as that's usually how I see it listed.

Yes, many companies will call an Elbow a "riser"...... it's similar to calling an Engine a "motor" ...... so to speak.


Perhaps think of it this way:

if this component was a "riser".......

Gotcha, thanks for clearing up the confusion. Will also check the hose/clamp to make sure not restricting

That would be good.

For reasons that I cannot explain, Volvo Penta has always issued the 95mm exhaust couplers in a length that is technically too short.
The OEM coupler barely slips onto the Y-pipe with enough fit to properly double clamp it.
This leaves the Elbow end short, causing many people to inadvertently and unknowingly install the double band clamps with one clamp squeezing down close to, or over, the scalloped areas.
All works well at first, however the clamp eventually begins to push the rubber into the scalloped areas.
