How is the drive ratio determi

How is the drive ratio determined? I am looking to change out a 280 with a 275. I am assuming the engine size determines the drive ratio?

"4 cylinders require 2.15:1 ra

"4 cylinders require 2.15:1 ratio. V6 and V8 require 1.61:1 ratio. And 6 cylinders in-line require 1.89:1 ratio.

This applies to the 250, 270, 275, 280, 290 and SP drives, single prop."

Thank you for your input. My buddy nailed a rock on the last run of the year and bent my shaft...my neighbor at the lake has a houseboat(sitting for decades) with a VP 275 in excellent condition. I will swap shafts. Thanks again.
