volvo penta 270 shift cable

bought a 1972 Glastron 164 16' 7" with Volvo 130 engine and Penta 270 outdrive. The boat was last in the water in 1993 so as expected it has some issues. The boat was very well cared for and the hull and interior are like new, but 20 years of sitting has taken its toll on the mechanicals! I have good mech skills but no experence with "marine parts" or out drives. The question I have first is How do I lube the shift cable? if its lubeable. I finally got it to "shift" today but I don't think its moving far enough to engage the gear and its stiff enough I am afraid Ill damage something If I keep pushing it. If it isn't possible to lube the cable and loosen it , is a new cable still available? thanks John

The cable is not "lubable". If it is stiff, just replace it, they are not expensive and you can get then in virtually any marine parts store. At the end of the cable sleeve there will be a number indicating its length, you will need it to get the correct replacement.

Ditto Eduardo.

This will be a 33C cable, and like Eduardo said, at one end or the other you should see the p/n, which includes the length.

This is a wet cable towards the drive end.
It will run through a cable sheathe and out the transom shield to the intermediate housing.
The sheathe's most FWD end must be clamped above the water line (at the interior of the engine bay), or you'll have a water leak.

BTW, the time to install a new shift cable, is during drive shaft bellows replacement since the transmission will be removed anyway.
(no need to remove the entire drive... just remove the transmission only)

Replace the water neck fitting while you're in there.

Don't cheap out and buy a less expensive cable. As Rick said the drive end of the cable is in the water. Do they still make the 33c supreme cable?

Hi again
some of the other issues with the boat and motor are pushing themselves ahead of the shift cable problem I found a "good" used fuel pump to replace the leaker on the motor and I am now trying to fix the water system issues. Replaced the impeller in the raw water pump but have not yet found new seals for it so worked on the cable today.
took the cover off the outdrive, sprayed every thing that moves and "helped"it while wife worked the shift lever back and forth. It now seems to work ok but won't know for sure till I can get it wet . I hope I can put off changing it till the drive shaft boot needs replaced. the one on it looks good but it hasn't been in the water for 20 years!
Here i go hijacking my own post have some other questions so I'll start a new one for them

Get that bellows off quick!!! 20 years Holy Cow!!!!!!!! Don't get that boat wet until it's changed or you WILL be looking for some really costly parts.

Amen....... this is too dang important to NOT change it out.

Age alone has compromised this bellows by now..... especially if the drive has been stored in the "UP" position for any portion of this 20 years.

Don't forget the PDS bearings and the water neck fitting!
