Volvo Penta 270 outdrive getting hot

"I have an '85 Bayliner with a Volvo Penta AQ125 engine and a 270 outdrive. We took it to the lake for the first time in 2 years. The engine wasn't running well at first, but it straightened out eventually. After an hour or so, I noticed the top of the outdrive was really hot. That ended our day at the lake. I have never noticed it even being warm before. It has plenty of oil, it's clean, and it doesn't smell bad. Any ideas? Thanks."

"This 270 single prop drive us

"This 270 single prop drive uses a "slinger" pump in the lower unit.
It is a centrifugal type pump attached to the driven gear!
It brings the cooler oil up and gravity feeds back down!
If the oil is not 30W (40W for very warm water temps) the slinger pump will not push oil to the transmission effectively.
An additional reason could be that the drive pin(s) that rotates the slinger has broken.
(this is a MUST to fix)

You need to first see what oil is being used, then secondly, pull the prop shaft bearing carrier from the lower unit. (Great time to install new prop shaft seals anyway)
All you need is five new O-rings and the two new seals to do this!

If you can rotate the slinger from the driven gear, you have broken drive pin(s).
This can be easily fixed when you remove the shaft from the carrier and the bearing from the shaft (BTW, this Angular Contact bearing is directional)

I'd not be using the boat until you make the repair.

"Thank you for the information

"Thank you for the information Ricardo!! I pulled the prop shaft and checked the slinger pump. Everthing was tight. I wasn't able to spin it. The oil in the foot is very old. Could it be that it has thickened up over time and just not flowing right anymore? Before I put the prop shaft back in and refill it, is there anything else I need to check? Thank you again for the information, because I would never have known that it was an oil pump behind the drive gear. The drawings I'm looking at didn't name that part."

Yes, the oil drain back "screen"!!!!
For this, the transmission OR the lower unit must be removed!
If you remove the transmission, you can probe the screen with a long reach magnet, followed by a rag on a long probe.
See what type of debris you drag up... if any.
You also have excellent access for replacing the water neck fitting and gasket.... A must in my book!!!!

If you pull the lower unit, you have full access to the drain back screen.... and can also replace the three O-rings between the cases... one of which is the pivot tube O-ring.... a rather critical O-ring in the sea water path!

"I pulled the lower unit today

"I pulled the lower unit today to check the drain back screen. The screen was clean. There was nothing in it.Is there anything in the top that needs to be checked? I was going to have to pull the lower unit anyway because the pivot tube o-ring is bad. I became suspicious of it while looking for information on the outdrive. I did notice that the engine ran warmer than usual about 190 degrees.Could that be causing the outdrive to overheat? I wouldn't think it would, but thought I'd ask."
