"I have a 2006 Chaparral 265 S

"I have a 2006 Chaparral 265 SSi wiith a 5.7 litre volvo penta engine. The oil pan has rusted through and there are two holes in it. It looks like the only way to fix this is to pull out the engine and install a new oil pan. This won't be cheap. Is there a way to replace the pan without removing the engine? Is the volvo replacement pan going to rot out in two years? Is there a way to prevent this in the future? The boat is always kept on a lift and covered when not in use. It only has 140 hours on it and is in the middle of its' thrid season. The only water that ends up in the bilge is rain water, and it never gets high enough in the bilge to touch the oil pan. Am I going to have other rusting problems? Has anyone else suffered from this? Nobody I talked to has ever even heard of something like this happening, but the dealer/mechanic showed me three other pans just like it with the same problem. What kind of marine engine manufacturer would produce something this inferior?"

"Hi
I had the same problem.Fd

"Hi
I had the same problem.Fd leak coming from 2 pinholes near the drain plug. I took a 3" washer with a center hole large enough to accomodate the drain plug, cut a heat exchager gskt to fit the washer and applied RTV to the gskt. and made what was essentially an oversize drain plug washer which got me another season. I don't know the location of your pinholes but I do know this is a common area for the pan to fail.On my 5.7 Gi there is a block fitting which is used in conjuction with the external dipstick. This makes finding an aluminum pan a problem , I have'nt been able to find a composite pan either. I bought a new repl. pan from Ebasic pwr. and wound up spraying it with Duplicolor Truck Bed coating after repainting it. I think they also offer a coated pan for more money.I pd $90 for the pan. I think V/P gets $240. I don't know if the bed coating will hold up to the heat, but I'm sure rust won't be an issue. Powdercoating is probally a better way to go, but expensive. I also put in a low profile bilge strainer about 4" ahead of the garboard plug and plumbed it to my raw water washdown pump with an inline filter and check valve. This way I can empty the bilge when up on plane. The main bilge pump can only grab so much water.Hopefully this will keep the bilge dryer. I think my next boat will have a 4 stroke O/B."

"Two-three years is too soon b

"Two-three years is too soon by any standard for an oil pan to rust through. I would put a formal complaint with Volvo Penta and ask them to cover the costs of installing a replacement oil pan. Your insurance company may be able to help if VP ignores yor concerns.

Your engine is a Chevy 350, but I'm not sure if the marine pan comes form a manufacturer other than GM (it probably does)."
