VOLVO DP outdrive ID or repair

AQ271DP

New member
In July 1979 I purchased a new Regal boat with a Volvo Penta AQ271DP outdrive. The outdrive suddenly doesn't stay up while parked and and will not maintain a trim setting under power. About as fast as I trim it to zero under power it trims itself back to minus8. There are no visible fluid leaks. I'm having trouble identifying the outdrive. I know the "271" refers to the horsepower of the Chev V8 and DP designates duoprop. How do I determine the outdrive model for parts and troubleshooting? Model number on the tag 888130 serial 1101557567. These stamped numbers are not totally clear, model almost looks like 86S130. A local marina says I need new cylinders which require an expensive kit for installation. To me it seems more like a check valve or pump.
Any ideas or suggestions? I appreciate the help. thank you.

Thank you for your response and my apollogies for the mess in this post. I guess when I pasted it from another forum I posted on and received no response it did this. I can't figure out how to edit it.

I would agree!

Pay for diagnostics up front, and hold their feet to the fire.
Many of today's mechanics are "parts changers", and the art of trouble-shooting and/or repair has been lost.

If you decide to take the Marina's suggestion at good faith, and decide have this work performed, have them write up a "quote" (not an estimate) stating that they have properly diagnosed the problem, and have identified the problem as being the cylinders.
If new cyliders do not correct the problem, this should be on their dime, not yours. They are the "experts".

Look closely at your hydraulic pump, so that you can tell if it has been disassembled during this work.
IOW, don't let them intall new cylinders, then learn that the cylinders were NOT the problem, and then correct the check valve issue covertly.

From what I can see here, the AQ271 used the 290 drive. The cylinders are unique to the 290.
Later drives eleminated the SS Anchorage bracket, and the cylinder design changed.

The 290 is sometimes refered to as the "small pin" drive, and some refer to a "large pin" 290.
There is no "large pin" 290 drive.
