"Hi, I am new to the whole boa

"Hi, I am new to the whole boating thing but have worked on many cars. The boat is an 18' Glasply with an AQ151 engine and 280 leg.
I bought the boat with the #1 and #3 pistons shot and the cylinder head shot too. The boat also came with 2 other spare engines that look OK (need TLC)I am in the process of rebuilding the motor and was wondering if anyone has input on this setup? is it a good engine, reliable?, power? I'll post pictures of the existing motor and maby someone could inlighten me as to why a piston could be missing chucks of the side in both #1 and #3 while the others are still OK"

"Detonation is one of a marine

"Detonation is one of a marine gasser's worst enemies. It can cause the piston damage that you describe. You won't know the cause unless you were to somehow see what the TA (total advance) is before you tear things down. And by now, you likely do not have that option.

The Volvo Penta OHC 4's are generally great engines, and not just from the perspective of a Volvo Penta proponent. Great little engines, IMO!

Keep the fluids fresh, cooling system working, timing belt and tensioner in good order, ignition timing correct (including TA) and they will run forever.

If I may..... A word of wisdom for you;
After you get your new engine built, make sure that you go entirely through the cooling water system. Do your best to understand how it works.
Start at the drive (pivot tube O-ring, water neck fitting, S hose, inside suction hose, sea water pump and impeller, etc.) and work your way towards the engine. Especially if no history on what the previous owner may or may not have done or neglected.
This can not have any suction leaks or it will not "pull" water up from the drive!!!!

Wow thanks for the info. When

Wow thanks for the info. When I got the boat the head and all parts were taken off the block so I don't know what his TA was. Once I finish the motor (its missing the distributor and carbs) I'll move onto the leg and see from there.

"Well, if you plan to use that

"Well, if you plan to use that same ignition distributor, you may want to have it checked out on a machine."

There is no distributor at all

There is no distributor at all. I need to get one and also the carbs. Is there any aftermarket ones that can be used for marine or do I have to stay with the oem ones

"Paul,

Are your spare engin

"Paul,

Are your spare engines identical to the damaged AQ151? On the outside they all look very similar, but the AQ151 has a forged crankshaft (not cast) with longer stroke than most other models sharing the same B230 block. It is the longer stroke and shorter pistons what makes that engine have a higher output (146 HP at crankshaft) together with the dual carbs and V cam.

You can go to this link and download the owner's manual and brochure for your engine model. Just type AQ151 under "engine type".

In any case, make sure you keep your "marine" components from the other engines (carbs, intake manifolds, alternator, starter, distributor, etc), for replacements are not cheap. To my knowledge, there are not aftermarket distributors but virtually all the distributors used on the OHC VP 4 cylinder engines are interchangeable. Regarding carbs, some people have reported good results upgrading to single Weber carb."

Well after more and more resea

Well after more and more research I have dug up that the motor is infact the two motors that came with the boat are an AQ140A and a BB140A
The one in the boat is an AQ151/SP . Which i guess this means that none of the parts I need are interchangeable

"The distributors are intercha

"The distributors are interchangeable, but not the carbs. You could probably install the carbs and intake manifold from the 140 in the 151 if needed, but have no idea of the results you would get. The heads are (to the best of my knowledge) not interchangeable, but the cams are (both engines have the V cam).

One thing you could do is have a chat with the guys at Chapman Motors in Cobble Hill. They should be able to source a head from a Volvo B230 block which would be compatible with your engine. In fact, you may be even better off getting a whole car engine, exchange the cranks, get a new set of pistons, and move all the marine parts from your old engine to the car engine.

Your other alternative would be making workable one of AQ140 (B21 block), which is exactly the same engine as the BB140 but the latter is for inboard application. Unfortunately, in that case you would end with less power and sidedraft carbs, which are becoming a bit of a rarity.

Here is the link for Chapman's web page. I know they have a location in Victoria, but their parts yard is in Cobble Hill.

"wow thats awsome, are you fro

"wow thats awsome, are you from victoria? or just really good a web searching.
What i think i might do, because the head i have seems to fit the AQ140 Motor with no problem i'll rebuild the 140 and tune it to a single carb with a new intake, power is not really a mandatory for me, this is no speed record setting boat. Just rebuild to play in the ocean with"
