Hi all,
I recently purchased a 2003 Pursuit 2865 Denali with the Volvo Penta 8.1gi-EF 375HP engine. Serial number 4012111070
I have several questions that I'm hoping someone can assist with.
I've had a few problems with the engine so far:
1) The anode in the top of the heat exchanger had broken off at some point which caused the heat exchanger to warp at the top and raw water began leaking at the upper gasket. I washed everything down thoroughly with fresh water as soon as I noticed it. I had to put two gaskets on to stop the leak and it has been working well since. I am going to buy a new heat exchanger and replace it myself to save some $. Any recommendations on where to purchase a new heat exchanger?
2) The motor was popping (backfiring) on the rare occasion at a certain RPM so I drained the Racor S3220TUL filter and found quite a bit of water in it. I also removed the OEM Volvo/Penta 3862228 filter on the fuel pump and found some debris and water in it as well. I replaced the OEM Fuel/Water Separator with a Sierra 18-7789 that I found stored on the boat. I have no idea if this is the right crossover filter but I screwed it on. I feel like I should replace the Racor element as well since there was so much water in it. I have drained the bowl a few times since and there is no sign of water now.
3) The next trip out the boat was running great. I tied up to the dock for 5 mins and headed back out. The engine overheated and shut off a few mins out. I came back to the dock with my kicker and started diagnosing. I cracked the lid to the heat exchanger while the engine was idling to see if it was pumping raw water and it wasn't. I felt the water pump and it was cold (engine off). I flushed it out with the freshwater fitting and the intakes were clear. I removed the intake hose to the raw water pump and there was water running. At this point I figured it was the impeller so I swapped that out. Took the boat out and the temps remained at 175. The next day I was heading back to my slip and I decided to run it up to test max RPM since the engine had felt a bit sluggish lately. For some reason the engine wouldn't trim up and I was only able to hit 3,600 instead of the 4,400 it would pull a couple of weeks ago (before all the water in the furl issues). I'm hoping the engine trim is just the relay since the trim down is working.
So, the acceleration is slower and it won't hit max RPMs. I suspect it's a fuel pressure or injector issue but I want to make sure it's not a compression issue. I think I am going to check engine compression first tomorrow morning and then start with inspecting the fuel line in the tank, the shutoff valve, and the fuel pressure at the fuel pump and on the engine. What fuel pressure numbers should I be seeing when I key it on in those two locations? The next step I was going to take would be to inspect the fuel rails and then finally pulling the injectors to have them tested and serviced. Does this sound right? Or should I be going about this differently? I'm not a mechanic obviously but I am mechanically inclined. The mechanics in my area are booked for weeks this time of year.
While trying to find part numbers I came across this Volvo Penta site and it seems to be accurate even though for some reason it's in Rotterdam! Volvo Penta OEM parts aren't cheap! Can I purchase aftermarket parts from Sierra, etc? I am one of the owners of a power sport business and we have accounts with Sierra and a large marine wholesaler here in BC, Canada so I can get discounts on parts. I am having trouble finding crossover part numbers on Sierra parts though. Is there a website that is helpful for that? The only ones I have found have very limited crossover part numbers. I'm looking for filters, serpentine belt, spark plugs, possibly injectors, etc
Thank you in advance for reading my post.
