I am getting a whining noise from the engine after approx. 30 min of run time. if I shut it down and restart it goes away. I just replaced my fuel filter and racor water seperator prior to this. Any ideas?

Have you checked your power steering level? This can cause a horrible whine if the level is slightly low and the pump will start to pull air. Check all the main belt tensioners and idlers for play and roughness in the bearings. How old is the belt? Try to identify where the noise originates.

thanks Paul... the belt is fine. definately not a belt squeal. but I will check the power steering. just wondering why it would go away immediately after shut down and restart? was hoping I didn't lose a fuel pump with the new fuel filter changes.

I am not to sure but a friend

I am not to sure but a friend told me with my boat it maybe the circulating pump. he told me to check the pulley for looseness. I haven't checked mine yet but I did notice that it is leaking know and does make sense with the whining noise. You might want to check that in your process. Also you can take a tube or even an socket ext. hold it to the pump or where ever you think its coming from and put your ear to see if it is the problem.

I did the screw driver to the ear test and it appears to be coming from the fuel pump. I just changed the my fuel filters. could there be a blockage causing the high pitched whine? also I have noticed my water pump is starting to leak. can I install the new impeller kit while she is in the water?

My father has a '98 5.7 Me

My father has a '98 5.7 Merc with a whining fuel pump. It started day one and has continued with 400+ hours on it.

Are you referencing the raw water pump? The impeller can be changed with the boat in the water. Pay close attention to the direction that the flaps face when you pull it apart.

"Thanks Mike, just to make sure...when I pull the pump off... it won't fill my bilge with sea water, with no shut off? should I look for anything else while I have the pump off?"

"The pickup tube should be hig

"The pickup tube should be higher than your waterline, so water should not fill your bilge. I have made caps out of PVC pipe that I use to plug the hoses to limit salt water near the engine.

You might find that you do not need to replace the impeller, rather just the paper gasket between the inspection plate and pump housing. Is this where the leak is occuring? Is your engine operating at proper temp currently?"

yes engine running fine. my engine is 2001 so I don't believe I have a paper gasket. just an O ring. but I will replace the impeller while I'm in there just for piece of mind. I already have the replacement kit.

"I doubt it is the raw water pump. The circulating pump is located on the front of the engine under the thermostat. Here is in ex of a 2001 4.3 location http://www.volvopentastore.com/Circulation_Pump_and_Thermostat/dm/cart_id.451076 901--category_id.332247--list_time.1217542296--session_id.710434723--store_id.36 6--view_id.316072 #17 and from what I found out you cannot rebuild them and also don't use an automotive. Although they may match up they only last one year on a boat engine."
