"My Bayliner 2556 had an OMC 5

"My Bayliner 2556 had an OMC 5.7 engine which was destroyed by seawater entering the oil pan through blown exhaust risers. I have been offered a Volvo 5.7 GSI engine which is complete and ready to drop in and couples up to the OMC drive leg. Has anyone done this conversion, if so are there any problems. The engine was originally a 1999 Volvo technition training engine for fault finding and has only 4 hours run time.

Any advise would be welcome."

"Hi Scott

The original engine was a 1988 carb unit. The new engine is fitted into the boat and running, I intend to sea trial the boat on Saturday."

"The engines on a try and see basis, if it works I pay for it, if not it comes out. Would be grateful for any problems to look out for whilst sea trialing, also is the leg ok for the 310hp output of the engine."

"the only issues that come to mind are connections/ elect. which you have apparently not experienced. drive should not be a problem. you may need to reprop, but break it in first."

"Thanks Scott, the leg has a 1

"Thanks Scott, the leg has a 15 x 15.5 prop fitted, which I think may have been oversize on the original engine and fitted for economy. (I live in the UK where gas is $10 a gallon). The engine suffered damage two weeks after I bought the boat, on the two occassions I took it to sea it seemed to take a long time to get on the plane ( approx 30 seconds), top speed was approx 25kn."

"The boat with new engine should be able to reach 30+ mph top. That is a very strong powerplant but your boat, although only 25 feet, is quite beamy and some of these are outfitted like Spanish galleons with dinette and shower, etc. Choosing a prop would be outside my experience. However, a fishing boat of similar size could probably use a 14 X 17 or 14 X 19. I suggest you try the original prop and extrapolate results."

"thanks Dennis, your not wrong

"thanks Dennis, your not wrong about the weight of the boat, dinette, heads, full size fridge, tender on the bathing platform, water tanks etc.
Will try the original prop and work from there.

Any idea on gas consumption, I am thinking 8-10 gph at 17knts which I would guess at approx. 3000rpm."

"You'll probably need a bit more prop, especially if you're after gas mileage.

Jeff"
