"Have a 2002 5.7 Gi FWC with about 200 hours on it. Replaced the impeller this year as preventive maintanance with an aftermarket part and the boat overheated right away when we put her over. I couldn't get water to flow through the engine even when it was hooked up to a hose. Ended up putting the old original impeller back on and the boat ran great, no overheating. I eventually put a brand new OEM impeller in to replace the original.

Everything seemed fine. Ran it for about three hours through all speed ranges, with no problems.
Took it out over Mem. day and the alarm went off. Brought it back to the dock and the new impeller was shredded. Found the missing vanes and installed another new impeller. I haven't had anymore issues with the new impeller, but it's only been run up on plane for a few minutes.

I've checked the pump body and it seems to be in good order. I suspect that it may be pulling air through the drive that would cause the impeller to burn itself up.

I installed a length of clear hose just before the steering cooler and it seems to be pulling clear water, but I haven't tested it when the boat is on plane, which is where I suspect the problem may originate. Still leery about running the engine hard with a even a temporary clear hose on it.

Any other ideas as to why a new impeller would burn up after 3 hours?

Can I install sea water strainers to a I/O? This would avoid a driveunit issue. As it is now, I only have the screen at the sterndrive intake to protect me from debris."

"You may have burnt a seal bet

"You may have burnt a seal between upper and lover unit when you ran it without water (exhaust temp). If You take off the drive check that the exhaust flapper is still in the system. There are clear steel-reinforced hoses on the market that may be used on the suction side, they weres used by BMW Marine on their diesels, and may be available from a Mercruiser dealer. They even used an Italian made cromed bronze sea water strainer. Note that it has to be mounted below water line if put on suction side."
