Volvo 454 engine just dies at idle and crusing?

Here is my problem that I hope someone can steer me in the right direction. ''91" Mirage 217 Intruder,454 engine, DP-B outdrive, electric fuel pump. This engine is in great running shape. It starts right up. But sometimes at idle or alittle faster and sometimes when racing the engine just dies like I just turned the key off. The engine will start right back up and away we go. It has a lanyard switch and that seems to be ok. And the ignition switch seems ok too. It has a Mallory distributor and Holly carb and 2 fuel filters. 1 cansiter and one inline at the carb. I just dont know what the heck is going on.

Is the engine the only part that dies?
I'd look for some other electric component which is on when the key switch is on and see if that goes off too.
On my boat, the key switch powers up my radio. So if my boat died, and the radio also shut off, I'd know I had an electrical problem not a gas problem.

With a carb problem (unlike fuel injection problems) usually the engine runs funny just before shutting down

Thanks Dennis for your reply. Yes the engine is the only thing that would die. Last week started to go through the whole electrical system. Took the main plug from the engine and pried open the terminals a bit. Then went behind the helm and checked all of the wires back there. Found one wire on the ignition switch that was loose. Tightend that up. I ran the boat yesterday and The Boat ran Great. Never once stalled. Thanks again for the reply. Learned one Thing! Always check the obvious 1st.
