"I have a 2003 3.0 Volvo GSP-C

"I have a 2003 3.0 Volvo GSP-C. I bought the boat used and have the list of problems !!!! One being the distributer seized. I installed a new distributer and got the boat running "by ear". I want to time it....I bought the jumper plug # 885163-6 ....I have the mark on the flywheel marked in white and am ready to go !!! EXCEPT, I can't see any numbers on the timing plate on the motor !!! It has 5 notches and none are deeper than the others so I have no idea which is top dead center. I know the basic timing on this motor is 2 degrees ATDC....I just don't know what notch to use !!! It seems to me that I could be off as much as 10 degrees either way if I guess wrong.

I have a photo of the plate from the seloc manual and I can't really read it either !! I am attaching the photo to this post with the hopes that someone can describe which notch is TDC and I will go ahead with timing my engine.

Thank you....I recently joined this forum and it has been a tremendous help in getting my boat running !!

"Art,

If you scuff up the plate with some sandpaper you may see the numbers stamped into the metal. I believe the lowest 'point' is a 4, then 0, then 4, 8 etc."

"Thanks Mike, I tried scuffing

"Thanks Mike, I tried scuffing and it is just full of rust !!! It had been sitting for a couple of years, but the info you gave me is what I am looking for. By lowest point....you do mean to the right or the bottom ??"

"Anyone else have input for me

"Anyone else have input for me ?? I am willing to take the best 2 out of 3 !!!!

Please give me your thoughts...I need to get this motor smoothed out.

Thanks, Art"

"Art,

You can also try an o

"Art,

You can also try an old trick I was taught. Warm up the engine and insert the jumper. Take a glass of water and rest it on the flame arrestor. Slowly rotate the distributor both directions until you see the least amount of ripples in the glass. Then shoot the marks with your light and see what you get.

You may chuckle at this, but give it a shot. It's worked for me a few times."

Looks like there are 6 < o

Looks like there are 6 < on the plate. You can assume that the two end < are not in play so that narrows the possibilities. I would start by setting the proper advance/retard number opposite the middle < and hunt either up or down about one < until you get the best idle. Sooner or later someone will chime in with the info you need.

"thostory,

Thanks....I will

"thostory,

Thanks....I will try that by default !! And hope someone chimes in with the actual info. I figure if I start in the middle I can't be too far off !!

"El Pescador,

Thanks, I had found that site also ....and I may have to use those settings. My plate seems a little different and even though it is the same engine, I would not put it past Volvo to make the plate different as a proprietary "thing". I am sure the motors are the same but the marks can be put in any configuration they want but in the end, I am sure the timing is actually the same also. I am going to the boat today and will "play" with these ideas I have gotten from all of you and see where I end up !! I am not sure how critical the base timing is with the module actually taking over once it is set but I do have enough info now to go back to work on it.

Thank you for your input.
