Long story short, Pleasure Craft Ford engine, old 351, some kind of Pleasure Craft bellhousing and drive shaft finished off with a Volvo Penta outdrive.
Is this a short open and visible "jack-shaft" affair......... or is this shaft fully enclosed within the flywheel cover (aka "bell housing" in the auto world)?
There are some very old "engine forward" installations whereby the engine is coupled to the Volvo Penta drive via an open shaft w/ a universal joint system.
Pictures would be worth a few thousand words here.
Said it would shudder when taking off then finally would not go at all.
This could be one of several issues.... I'll need more info.
I tried to spin the prop by hand and can hear grinding noise.
This is very Un-Typical of these older AQ series drives.... unless the drive underwent water intrusion at some point.
Drained oil and lots of shiny little pieces came out along with some really burned oil.
White-ish oil, or brown-ish oil?
Nonetheless, any heavy metallic debris is certainly not good.
And if that isn't bad enough, any lower unit contamination has also been pumped up to the transmission and back down again.
I have a number off the outdrive 2791290.
Basically, that would be a 270 drive.
That number should be followed by an Alpha Character...... "B", "C" or "D"...... "B" being the 1.61:1 V-8 ratio.
The ratio would be good, ONLY if no one has changed the lower unit.
My questions, are parts available,
Yes, if you know how to source them.
second what is the gear ratio,
If nothing has been changed, the Alpha Character will tell us this.
For a V-8, the final over-all ratio should be 1.61:1.
NOTE: for this series drive, the final over-all ratio is a result of the combination of the transmission reduction, and of the lower unit reduction.
All transmission (again, in this series) use the same reduction...... it's in the lower unit where the change occurs for each engine.
and is this outdrive interchangeable with another 270 series outdrive as long as ratios are the same?
Yes, but this involves some critical dimensions and a change to shim values.
On another note, Ricardo marine, I have decided to finish my boat off, found an outdrive and now have another winter time project.
Still need to get the fine spline couple for my 270 outdrive,
Define "fine spline couple" for me..... maybe a picture or two.
The only splined coupler used would be for the vertical shaft.
This couples the lower unit vertical shaft to the transmission vertical shaft.
Are you by chance asking about a fine spline female universal shaft yoke for a fine spline PDS?
