I have a 270 outdrive that has the "gills" in the front and not in the center of the drive. Can anyone recomend an engine flusher ("ear muffs") that would work on this?

"Ron,

"Ron,
Be advised that there may be more to it than the gills on the side. I'm not 100% sure, but, I think the 270 drive may also have a hole on the bottom of the drive in front of the skeg. This hole, if present, is also an water intake and requires covering when flushing or else you will not get suction. Check for this hole, and if it is there, ensure it is covered when using muff style flushers. In my opinion, the best way to flush is to submerge your drive in a large basin with a garden hose in it. I went the lazy man's route and incorporated a flushing system in my raw water supply line, with a quick connect for my garden hose, to both backflush and forward flush the drive, the cooling system heat exchanger and exhaust manifolds in my FWC system. Good luck... BZ."

"Thanks Bobzilla, and as a mat

"Thanks Bobzilla, and as a matter of fact that is exactly what I do when I need to start the engine onland. However, my reason for asking is how can I circulate anti-freeze through the engine to winterize it? I cant fill up a bucket with 50 gallons of anti-freeze...LOL"

"Ron, what I do is mix my antifreeze and water in a 5 gallon bucket which I place in the boat near the engine. After the engine is warm and I think the thermostat has opened, I then attach a 3-4 foot hose to the input side of the water pump, place the other end of the hose in the bucket, and then restart the engine. The water pump will then circulate the antifreeze mixture into the engine and you will start seeing the antifreeze come out the exhaust. I also put a large container with it's opening facing the exhaust port to try and catch as much antifreeze as I can so as little as possible gets into the gutters and ends up in local waterways. Be sure and stop the engine before the bucket runs out of antifreeze mix. <u>And probably most important, use less/non-toxic antifreeze to protect pets, wildlife, and people and also rinse the area well with water when you are done to dilute it even more.</u>"

"One more thing...once you fin

"One more thing...once you finish circulating the antifreeze mix, while you still have the water supply hose disconnected from the water pump, be sure and put some antifreeze into it until it runs out the water intake gills on the leg. So basically, if it's done right, you've just winterized everything from the water intake to the exhaust port."

"Ron,
Had I've known you intended to winterize, my initial post would have been different.... Personally, I would flush and then pull the block drains etc... get all coolant fluids out of the block...
