Volvo 270 No Forward Gear 1972 130

Hello -

Recently purchased a 1972 Glastron with a 130hp Volvo Penta motor and 270 outdrive. Ran great the first dozen times we took it out, but currently I am having an issue. We had a tornado touch down at my house, and the trailer was tipped backwards and was resting on the bottom fin of the outdrive for 15 minutes. Now the forward gear will not engage, it stays in neutral. Reverse works fine, and a few times when I tried to put her in forward gear she went into reverse instead.
Anyway, I have checked the throttle/shift cable assembly and neutral button and they seem to be functioning fine. This is my first boat, so i am looking for some advise as to what to look for next. I do have the OEM repair manual, but would like a little push in the right direction towards what i need to check out first in regards to the outdrive.

Any help would be appreciated

Try disconnecting the shift cable vertical linkage at the out drive.
Bring the eccentric piston to neutral (it will actually detent to neutral if all is OK)

Check for shift cable/bell crank travel to make certain that it is capable of moving the eccentric piston full distance in either direction.

Center any "Over-Travel" making sure that the re-connection is absolute Neutral at the throttle/shift unit AND at the out drive.

This will give you a place to start.



BTW, with the engine OFF, and attempting a FWD shift, rotate the propeller in REV direction! This should lock the sliding sleeve and gear cup.
Likewise, attempting a REV shift, rotate the ............ well, you get the picture.

If you cannot get the sleeve/cup to lock up by doing this....., then you have another issue, and we need to look at a few other possibilities.

I think I found the first part of my problem. The shift linkeage in the out drive would not go into forward gear. I disassembled it and found that the L shaped safety/lockout pin at the lower right rear of the assembly was bent and would not push out. When I put the assembly back together (without that pin) I could manually engage forward gear and the prop would spin one way and lock out the other (thank god)
So now for the cable:
It will engage in reverse (it pulls the linkage inwards). However, when I try to use the throttle and put the boat in forward gear, the cable goes to the neutral position. I can, however, manually pull the cable out to the position it is supposed to be in for forward. Looks like I am going to need to pull some panels and check the shift/throttle mechanism. Is there something specific i should be looking for?

OK.... how your control works... When you push the control pin in to shift the engine, you cause two (rather cheaply made, i.e., stamped steel) gears to mesh so that when you move the throttle arm, that the shift arm also moves. It appears as if this gear is worn or broken inside your control. Specifically, the gear teeth that mesh to move your shift cable into reverse are OK, but those teeth that are supposed to mesh when you shift into forward are shot. It is also possible that the attachment of the gear sector to the shift arm (its staked as I remember) is loose or shot. Sometimes this can be fixed, however dismantling the shift unit is not for the feint of heart. The internal parts are not replaceable parts... Looks like new control time to me.

The way this type of throttle/shift unit works, is that you ideally receive full and complete gear engagement prior to any throttle action.
FWD shift always involves an "extended" cable at the out drive.
REV shift always involves a "retracted" cable at the out drive.

The shift cable causes the eccentric piston (inside of the transmission shift mechanism) to either raise or lower the sliding sleeve to complete sleeve/cup contact before anything occurs to change throttle position (i.e., increase engine RPM).
(btw; we are not actually meshing or un-meshing any gears in this type of transmission.... we are raising and/or lowering a sliding sleeve.... no teeth, just two conical surfaces creating friction until lock-up)

If I am seeing the video correctly, it would appear that a shift into REV seems to be working (i.e., the lever pulls on the shift cable prior to any throttle action!)
However, it also appears that a FWD shift is NOT pushing on the cable at the shift unit (i.e., extending the shift cable at the drive prior to throttle action!)

As I see it, you are getting FWD throttle action, but are NOT getting FWD shift cable movement! If so, I believe that your issue is at the throttle/shift unit.

**Is the "Throttle Only" button set correctly for normal operation?????
(this takes gear engagement out of the loop for Engine Running ONLY!)

You may want to consider this newer style..... it still uses the 33C cables.
This one is on auction right now.

Fixed it...one of the levers inside the mechanism was rounded off...Had a friend make me a new one...next problem...

Took the boat out yesterday and had Forward and Reverse! But it was running hot. We were out for about two hours and never had to use the bilge...is this a impeller problem? If so, is it located in the Outdrive or the motor?

The Volvo Penta AQ series, 200 and later, never did have a sea water pump in the drive. They have always been engine mounted.

There is a water neck fitting on the top section of the main suspension fork that must be in near pristine condition.
One tiny tiny suction leak here, and you will loose all cooling once up on plane.
(this area comes up and out of the water when planing)

Ricardo...cant thank you enough for all your help...

I just replaced the impeller with a new one...there was one broken tooth on it. Should I be worried about it since I couldnt find the broken tooth? Do you think this is what made the boat run hot?

Do your forensic work, and find the broken impeller blade piece. It may be large anough to cause an issue.
