Having a 1969 225Hp Volvo chev engine (factory 225 hp) with 270 outdrive. Problem is =i believe a bad /intermittent =neutral safety switch? Switch is =NOT!! on the side mounted controll-no wiring. Controll has only a button to get throttle only - no electrical in / on /near the controll box. Where is the safety switch located??I have traced shift & throttle cables from controll to engine & outdrive - no switch.!! Help. Starter is good as is solenoid! Advise?

Are you sure the are no wires going to the shift box? I don't believe it could be anywhere else. It cranks in gear and out? Did you just get this boat? Morse made shift boxes with out SIG switches. Is it a Morse box like most were?

No wires what so ever - looks all origional as controll box. Even looked for wires removed to eliminate the switch -none tied up I can find. Problem im having is wont crank sometimes & sometimes will -has new starter & solenoid!! Even installed remote starter to solenoid to test -starter works fine! Today i replaced the ignition switch - still doing same thing!! Pulling whats left of my hair!

In 1969, the 225Hp Volvo chev engine (factory 225 hp) with 270 outdrive would not have been OEM.
Someone has changed the engine/drive.

If you have the old Bendix style starter motor, pull it and toss it in the recycled bin, and replace it with one of today's HTGR/PMGR starter motors.

Kim makes a good suggestion........ start with the key switch solenoid circuit terminal.... should be labled "S".
Check for power when the switch is in the "Start" position.

Also trace the yellow/red stripe circuit out in either direction.
If there is a Neutral Safety switch, you will find it.

I am on my second 1969 Volvo I/O Chriscraft boat. Both came factory stock with Chris manufactured 283 CID/185 HP engines ( and extended PDS) . Both came with MORSE side mount single lever controls. Neither have/had neutral safety switches. The neutral safety/start switch is a function which almost universally occurs within the control head.

Does your starter have the old bendix style or the later spring type pinion? Just guessing that is the GM305cid. Either way adding a relay at the motor will shorten the distance power has to travel from the battery to the start solenoid.

When I saw this post I do remember doing this on some larger Skipjacks that had long power runs. The sometimes will and sometimes won't, problems are a bitch. The slave solenoid should cure the "sometimes".
