I think my steering fork has s

I think my steering fork has seperated from the steering shaft (rope caught in prop stalled engine). Despite having removed the bolt thru the steering arm and attempted to spread the ring the fork will not drive down through the transom shield. I have used a serious amount of persuasian (read hammer)with absoulutely no movement is there a locking pin or clip somewhere.
If the shaft it's self has broken is it possible it's hanging up on the grease groove. I got a steering fork off a 270 but it looks like it's a larger diameter shaft ( it came out easy) any help appreciated. I am thinking about putting a steering rod between the exhaust flapper bolts (twin engines) now how desperate is that.

"If you have the 1-1/2" sp

"If you have the 1-1/2" spline, then get a 7/8" or a 15/16" deep socket, place it on top of the steering yoke and hammer on top of it with a good size hammer. However, make sure you are not using a deep socket so wide that you will be hitting the transom shield instead of the steering yoke. If you have removed the bolt from the steering arm, you should be able to drive the steering yoke through the transom shield. The steering yoke swivels around two plastic bushings, so if it is frozen it should be on the spline. When it starts moving you can use two pry bars from the outside of the boat - one at each side of the steering yoke - to help to drive it out."

"Thanks for the suggestion to use a socket, I will try this, I have beat on it with faily good size pin and a 2kg hammer and it has not moved despite the fact that it does rotate in the shield ??
I will use a soket and the same size hammer and see what happens.
