"hi, my name is rick. i just bought a 79 bahama with a aq 120 engine with a 270 outdrive from my dad. so the only thing i know about it is what he has told me. i understand there are two differant water pumps, one for circulating anti-freeze througout the engine, the other for circulating water from the lake to cool the antifreeze. my problem is that the over heats while in a tub. it will not suck water out of the tub at all. if i put the water hose directly in the filler neck of the radiator it will shoot somewater out of the exhaust flapper and stay around 200 210 degrees. i installed a new rubber waterpump. i also pulled a copper plug from bottom of the exhaust manifold and water came out. but only when the hose was in the filler neck.

please help!"

"Check that the raw water hose

"Check that the raw water hose connector in the outdrive is not corroded/perforated. If it is in bad condition, the engine raw water pump will suck air rather than water, mainly when the boat is planing. The replacement hose connector is cheap, around 30 bucks for the Sierra aftermarket part 18-2778.

Typical causes for overheating

Typical causes for overheating include 1) a bad o-ring around the water tube between the lower and intermediate units in the outdrive; 2) barnacles or other marine growth inside the grid; 3) a corroded hose connector; 4) a defective hose between the outdrive and the transom shield; 5) loose hose clamps or flanges in the suction line between the transom shield and the raw water pump; 6) defective raw water pump (usually a bad impeller); 7) clogged strainer before heat exchanger; 8) choked heat exchanger; 9) plugged-up exhaust manifold due to internal corrosion; 10) defective fresh water pump; 11) loose alternator belt; and 12) a bad thermostat.

But the most common cause seems to be the raw water hose connector being corroded/perforated.

"alright, well thank you sir!

"alright, well thank you sir! i just got off work and am going to tear into it. like i said it wont overheat if i put the hose in the raw water tank, it just will not suck water from the outdrive deal"

"ok. i pulled the hose from

"ok. i pulled the hose from the pickup (inside boat) and put the water hose and water shot out of the fins like its supposed to. i shot the water the other way and started the boat and it came out of the exhaust and stayed cool.

i pulled the cover off of the front antifreeze radiator deal. its all nice and clean in there. i am lost, the only thing i can think of is that its sucking too much air somewhere to pump water from the outdrive??

what is the transom?

and the impeller is brand new."

ok. thanks for the help. it l

ok. thanks for the help. it looks like i have to pull this thing all apart to change the suction hose and get to that connector right? is that i big pain in the rear?

"ok, after better observation

"ok, after better observation i put the hose back in the metal tube (inside boat) so that it would come out of the outdrive. and it appears to be leaking at the base of that connector your talking about, and pretty badly. i will try and tighten it up, but i just encountered a black widow in the general area and i am not a big fan of spiders lol!"

"tightening did not work. afte

"tightening did not work. after fighting with the gear selector cable for an hour i got the connector off. the gasket was shot, and the hose bib part of the connector is shot. and i can tell where someone put silicon before, but obviousely did not work. so i guess i will try and find a connector"

"These connectors are availabl

"These connectors are available aftermarket, they are pretty cheap, and they come with a gasket. This is the direct replacement for yours (Sierra SIE18-2777)

http://www.marineengine.com/newparts/part_details.php?pnum=SIE18-2777&returntopa ge=sierra_marine/sierra00826.htm

but this one (Sierra SIE18-2778) should fit as well

http://www.marineengine.com/newparts/part_details.php?pnum=SIE18-2778&returntopa ge=sierra_marine/sierra00826.htm

Any marine parts store should be able to get you one."

"ok the local boat place had w

"ok the local boat place had what i needed. i installed it after making a custom allen wrench. it sucks great now. but the gasket around the radiator is leaking now. so it still ran about 200 210.

and i noticed it is leaking warm water now but on the outside of the boat by a rubber boot, so thats no big deal i dont think"

"Well, now you know the Volvo

"Well, now you know the Volvo Penta part number, the price, and where to get one from. You may also want to try to remove the cover 34 and put a bead of ATV sealant on both sides of the gasket if a new one is not readily available in your area."

"ya i fixed it! shes runnin s

"ya i fixed it! shes runnin smooth now, still runs at about 200 210, but its shootin alot of water out of the exhaust, so i guess thats where it wants to run."
