Use a heavy duty trash bag to catch most of the oil.
Hook/tape/ tie it so when you open the drain plug, most of the oil goes into the trash bag.

If you bilge has fiberglass stands or othe rough arease which might poke a hole in the bag, then put some newspaper down forst.

Be carefull lifting it out, lest you rip it.

I had originally planned some sort of custom shaped funnel and hose out the drian-plug hole, but my drain has a check valve in it.

What?

I'm assuming he has an inboard ENGINE that needs an oil change.
There is no way to get a decent size drain pan under the oil pan.
Trick is to catch the drain plug in the bag.

I actually use a vacuum arrangement to suck oil out the dipstick tube into a sealed container.
But the trash bag trick works in a pinch.

p.s. The insanity began years ago at my house ;-)

If the OP is asking about an engine oil change, and if he's planning to be a boat owner for any length of time..... the Tempo Oil Boy is the simple solution.
I wouldn't mess around with any other oil evacuation device..... these are pretty darn hard to beat, and they have multiple uses.

Then while the pan is empty, install a remote oil drain hose. Much faster than using the dip stick tube.

But since the OP has not return, we don't know if he's asking about engine oil or drive gear oil.
