I just changed a bad working voltage regulator (881346T ) to a brand new one (6d3-81960-00) and immediately at start up the engine did not run well.
It seemed like the ignition was effected and after several start attempts it finally ran well at ideal (1000 rpm) for a couple of minutes until I gave some throttle and the engine immediately died.
After several attempts I decided to change back to the old regulator and check if the problem disappeared. It very well did and the engine ran perfectly again at idle and higher rpm.
I even tested to unplug the regulator and the engine ran still well. I tested to plug in the new regulator again and the same problem occurred.
The old regulator did still charge the battery ok at higher rpm but gave only 13 V at idle (1000 rpm) The new regulator gave 14.5 V at idle during the few minutes I manage to keep the engine running.
My question is if the new voltage regulator could be “broken” and then effect the ignition or other electronics like this or if there could be any other issue with the engine that in combination with a fully functional regulator cause the problems!?
