Voltage regulator issue

Okay i have a 2000 125hp mercury, I was on the water and put it in full throttle, and it died on me, so i open it up and notice almost every wire coming from the voltage regulator melted. so i move the wires to where they are not touching each other and was able to get it going, and back on the trailer. now I have serached this issue, and i have wing nuts on the battery which i will replace. But it i could get it started again, does that mean my voltage regulater is still operational? How do i check it? and how do i check the stator? What should be my next move? just replace wires? or whole thing?

Don't do nanything til some expert comes on and gives good advice. Your regulator(s) are bad, leaving full voltage, thus burning the wires. battery may not have cooked.

well if that is the case, why not go ahead and replace regulator. seems pretty simple. could i mess something else up in the process?

Sounds like you have s a serious problem there. I don't know what caused it, that's why I recommended wait for a pro. I changed out mine at $125 each... Wouldn't want you to waste your $ without knowing the cause of the burnt wires...BF
