i have a 1984 mercruiser model
i have a 1984 mercruiser model #488 in a sea ray.
i have to replace regulator. It is putting out 16 volts at times.(when it wants too) When the output is high it blows ship to shore radio fuse.
other electronics stop working but resume when voltage goes back to normal 14. My regulator is water cooled.Prices on this are low $400 upwards to $550.My local auto shop used a cross refrence and came up with a auto regulator that indicates is would work for mercruiser except the cross refrence did not list my mercruiser # The number i purchased is #VR 171 made by standard electronics - 4 wire hook up. my regulator is 3 wire?
does anybody have knowledge if this will work or any advise to give. a local marine supply house wanted to sell a kit to replace with a delco remy external regulator rather than the internal one that is in boat He said the regulators seldom go and he had one sitting for years. He had one to sell for $350.
the auto one though not water resistant was $40
thanks
