"when i connect my volt meter

"when i connect my volt meter to the battery , it reads 12.2 volts. i leave them connected and turn the key and the voltage drops to 11.5 is this normal or will it cause my engine not to fire"

"Jessie, 12.2 volts is a touch low and may indicate the battery has seen better days. A fully charged battery in good shape should read about 12.5 volts, and once the motor is started, you should read about 13.5 if the charging system is working properly.

The drop to 11.5 may be normal depending on how many things are connected up that are sucking power.

I know personally that my GPS/Sounder and VHF alone cause my voltage for fall down to near 11.7 volts if I have them turned on before my motor is running and the alternator stator is doing it's job to supply power....."
