Volt guage at the dash.

Volt guage in dash reads a little less than battery voltage at idle,(understandable). The more rpm's the lower it goes. It will go down to 10v at 3000rpm. . Not having charging problem. Had the altinater (Mando), checked and it is fine. At the alt reading is 14.3 and at the battery it is same, 14.3. Any ideas??

We had a poster a week ago or so with the same or similar issue, it was a wiring issue not the guage........bad wires and or connections to the guage....
 
We will soon find out because the company that makes the guage said it sounds like the guage might be bad.(Go figure). Anyway it only cost $37.00 delivered and that is not much to eliminate a possibility. My vote is on this site being right. The plot thickens, stay tuned!!

Well here we are again. Still have the same problem. As engine rpm goes up volt guage goes down from 12.75 at idle to 10.50 at 3000 rpm. Did run a new ground to the guage with no change. Replaced guage with new one and still have the same situation. Merc dealer said a bad tach would cause this and to test the tach, disconnect the pink wire. Did this and the tach did'nt work but still had same situation. Had alt checked out and it is putting out 14.5 at orange output wire. The place that sells rebuilt alts said it is good.
Any suggestions??

After all this time I found the problem and beat it. This has been a long time. The boat was wired according to the Merc manuel. The accessory fuse panel was wired per the manuel. What I did was seperate it onto it's own source. A fused 10 ga wire from the battery selector switch is all it took. Now the whole electrical system is seperated. Engine management on it's own and boat on it's own. The new volt gauge goes up to 14.2 instead of down to 10.5 at 3,000 rpm. Even tho there is'nt a lot of stuff on the boat fuse panel,( well under Merc's limit), the wireing from the engine did not like it.
