The voltage meter on the dash will reach 14 1/2 volts and the Tach will cut out. Is it normal for the voltage to get this high? My motor has a voltage regulator, that I have replaced. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks in advance. "

"Neparon.... This may not pertain to your problem but in the past, OMC has stated that a maintenance free battery would result in a high voltage indication. However, 14.5v is considered the top of the voltage range pertaining to a 12v battery but is not considered exceptionally high.

I keep a shop tach on hand and usually take a short cut in troubleshooting that problem by simply pluging the shop tach in to compare.

Note... I retired before that engine came into existence. If the terminal strip mentioned does not exist, modify my statement below as needed.

However, you can check the tach as follows. Find the terminal strip where the "Gray" tach wire attaches to the "Gray" regulator/rectifier wire. Move the tach gray wire from that terminal to the "Yellow/Gray" wire that leads from the stator assy. If the tach still malfunctions with that connection, the tach is faulty.
