Vintage Mercury 40hp

Having a hard time finding the year for this one. Serial #2980353. I do know it is a 70s model. It says direct charge on the back.

It's a two cylinder. With the red banding.

drawing a blank on my sources on serial...but its prior to 1973...merc went blue band then...

Well that narrows it down. Yeah I also tried to look the serial up and couldn't find it. I do live in Canada so I'm not sure if that makes a difference. I'm trying to upload a picture but it doesn't seem to be working.

I have had the motor around since 94 when i was just little. My dad bought the boat and long story short just after a year of ownership the transmission leg dropped off well driving it. I remember it well even though i was only 4. I'm planning a complete rebuild as I'd love to see this motor make a wake again. I do remember it went like hell and my dad use to keep up with the 75s some how. Anyways thanks again for the help.

It's been stored decently.
It doesn't look like there is that much wiring.
And even if it is shot it's always possible to redo it.
It's worth it to me based on sentimental value.
